Wake up, wake up my dear husband The cock has crowed and the sun has risen So wake up my dear and let’s go to the field together Let’s start by sowing seeds We´ll sow rice and go back home We´ll live happily I´ve brought some rice to eat Hurry up, finish your meal Before the sky is overcast We have to get home early Let’s gather some wood and go home Our children need us Whatever we face, we stay next to each other We´ll climb the hills with ease Same as we handle problems together We´ll call our ancestors and pray for our children So wake up, wake up, my dear husband
10.
My sisters, come, bring your baskets Today we will work on the paddy fields We will harvest the rice We will collect jackfruit We will sow millet Then we will come back home and eat ragi My sisters, come, bring your baskets Our fields are full of cashew nuts It’s time to collect them When the time of mangoes will come We will collect those My sisters, come, we have to work Our crops are ready We´ll have enough to eat
11.
One leaf fell down from the tree There was an orange seed from which the tree sprouted Come, beat the drum and we’ll dance We are sons of our kings Come friend Listen to our song We’ll be telling the story Register it well We are sons of god There used to be a huge giant And when he died, his bones turned into trees and plants That’s how our land came to be Our land is full of fruits But only today we are dancing Because today is special You came and asked us to dance So now we are dancing Play the drum
12.
Sleep my dear child You are so beautiful, so nice Why are you crying my child? What is causing you pain? What is troubling you? What is making you sad? Please fall asleep I named you after our beloved ancestor Why are you sad even though you bear such a good name? Please sleep, my child We keep you safe as if you were a bird in a nest We put you in a cradle So why are you unhappy my dear? You make me feel worried when I see that you can´t sleep Please, stop crying and sleep, my dear child
13.
Today you will become my wife After wedding I promise I will take you for a long journey We will travel around the world You will see different things around you New buildings, new cities, new cars New people I will take you everywhere I will take you to different countries, you’ll be safe Why do you want to take me far? I want to stay home with my parents I can´t leave them, I can´t leave my village I don’t want to go with you - Don’t be afraid, you´ll see, we´ll be happy I will protect you We´ll stay together, I´ll never leave you Today you will become my wife One day you will see the whole world with me
14.
Come and dance We’ll dance together Under a mango tree Stop complaining When we dance, everybody must step as one Be careful, there is the mango tree It will mock our dancing We won´t be the same no more As legs and arms swing into motion The mango tree is here, so don´t dance the same way We are hungry We are thirsty Only today we are dancing for you How did you come here and why did you ask us to dance? We don’t know how you came here Suddenly we are dancing

about

Talaqpo’s album Totribes is inspired by band member's Lucie's travels through India and the many encounters with local people and music.
It particularly draws on the music and languages of tribal communities in the Odisha state (tracks 1-5,7), the Carnatic music from Tamilnadu (8), and the Hindustani music from Himachal Pradesh (6).
The album features several field recordings of folk songs of the Lanjia Saora, Dongria Khond, Gadaba and Bonda tribes from the Odisha region (tracks 9-14). All recordings were made in 2016 by Lucie with the kind permission from the community members.
Thanks to Jitu Jakesika, Jitu Kumar and Baneet Singh for helping translating the lyrics from their original languages.
